One of the most loved films of Salman Khan, Kick, was released 10 years ago, on July 25. The film is memorable for many reasons, one of them being the cool mask worn by the superstar when his character Devi turns into Devil. A few months after its release, the makers of the film released a special coffee table book ‘Kick: A Karizmatic Journey’. It consists of not just rare BTS images but also some fascinating trivia and cast and crew members talking about their experiences. Suresh Selvarajan who designed the mask, opened up on the whole process.
10 Years of Kick: Suresh Selvarajan, who designed Salman Khan’s COOL mask, also created monstrous war machine in Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal; says “With Kick, we used 3D print technology in India for the FIRST time”
Suresh Selvarajan said, “When we decided on making a mask for the film, the first thing that came to my mind was it should be ‘a first time ever or a never before’ mask. We made nearly 300 different masks before settling for this one. Once the hard part of choosing the design was over, we did an 8-month-long research on the material.”
He further said, “This is the first time that the mask was made using a 3D print technology in India. The mask-making process flow is equal to that of a Hollywood mask-making.” He also added, “We tried 50 colour and texture options before arriving at the final one.”
Incidentally, Suresh Selvarajan is the same person who went on to create the iconic war machine gun in the Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Animal. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama in December 2023, Suresh explained the effort that went into making the weapon saying, “If it was like a statue, I could have made it in 2 months. But it’s a working model. You can accelerate, turn and rotate the weapon. It took almost 4-5 months to make the gun. We also made 15,000-16,000 dummy bullets. Almost 100 people worked quite hard to bring the gun to life.”
He also designed the masks worn by the goons in the same scene. At this point, he drew parallels with Kick, “I am lucky when it comes to masks! I made the first 3D mask for Salman Khan’s Kick (2014). The introductory poster of the film featured just the mask. It was a huge hit.”
