NEW DELHI: Two security personnel and at least twelve Maoists were killed in a fierce encounter with security forces in Bijapur district of Bastar division in Chhattisgarh on Sunday morning.
Bijapur is the same district that recorded the killing of eight security personnel and a civilian driver in an IED blast in early January, which was followed by eight Maoists killed in an anti-Maoists operation in the last week of Jan.
Two jawans were also injured in the ongoing encounter in forests of Bijapur.
A police official said that uniformed bodies of 12 Maoists were recovered along with weapons and explosives as the intermittent firing goes on.
A team of security forces had launched an anti-Maoists operation in forests of the Indravati National Park area, based on inputs about the presence of senior cadres in large numbers.
A gun-fight broke out in the wee hours on Sunday in the forest between Maoists and security forces and 12 Maoists were killed.
The forces also lost two jawans in the encounter while two others who sustained injuries, were evacuated for treatment.
Officials said that the condition of the injured jawans was out of danger and they will be shifted to higher centre for treatment. Reinforcements have been sent to the site of encounter and search continues.
