2024 was an interesting year. While, on the one hand, macho heroes ruled the box office like always; on the other, the female power reigned supreme as well. Women-led projects or films backed by talented and powerful women either got a lot of accolades worldwide or helped amass moolah for the makers. Bollywood Hungama, in this special year-ender report, focuses on the films which comprised those Strees who made our country proud and who were the newsmakers of 2024.

1. Stree 2
Shraddha Kapoor fronted this horror comedy, and it broke all records. It stunned the industry as it crossed Jawan to become the biggest Bollywood grosser of all time. Many factors contributed to its success, including the horror-comedy genre, which is working big time right now. But Shraddha too had a major contribution. Meanwhile, the film was backed by Jio Studios, headed by the enterprising Jyoti Deshpande. In fact, the studio had a superb year as they gave back-to-back hits.
2. Laapataa Ladies
Laapataa Ladies, backed by director Kiran Rao and producer Jyoti Deshpande, was a sleeper success at the box office. On Netflix, it went on another level. Soon, it earned accolades all over the world and was also India’s official entry to the Oscars. It’s a rare film that has not got a single negative feedback.
3. All We Imagine As Light
It’s a film that made India proud. It was made by a woman (Payal Kapadia) and told a lovely story about female bonding. The world was touched by the narrative and hence, it was the first film from India to compete in the main competition at Cannes since 1994 and the first to win the Grand Prix. It keeps on collecting awards and accolades regularly. Many felt that if it had been selected as India’s official entry to the Oscars, it would have emerged victorious.
4. Crew
Crew was a rare female-centric film that opened to big numbers and boosted the star power of its lead actors, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Tabu and Kriti Sanon. Producer Ektaa Kapoor also was praised for mounting this film on a lavish scale.
5. Do Patti
Kriti Sanon turned producer and collaborated with Kanika Dhillon for Do Patti, which achieved considerable viewership on Netflix.
6. Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba
This is another Netflix original, also backed by Kanika Dhillon, which has made waves on Netflix. It is led by Taapsee Pannu who is seen in a sizzling and never-before-seen avatar in this series.
7. Girls Will Be Girls
Richa Chadha and her husband Ali Fazal turned producers with Girls Will Be Girls and it’s a film that won accolades at various major festivals. Writer-director Shuchi Talati was praised for her execution, choice of subject and extracting fine performances from the lead cast.
8. The Buckingham Murders
Kareena Kapoor Khan turned producer with this murder mystery, and it became a huge success on Netflix and was on the number 1 most watched film in several countries. It was also produced by Ektaa Kapoor.
9. Ulajh
Ulajh offered a fresh perspective on the world of diplomats and Indian Foreign Services, a rarely explored territory in mainstream cinema. It featured Janhvi Kapoor in a lead role and was produced by Amrita Pandey-led Junglee Pictures. It also got huge viewership on Netflix and managed to be in the top 10 list in India for four weeks, besides being in the coveted list in other countries as well.
10. Santosh
Laapataa Ladies is out of the Oscar race, but Indians shouldn’t be disheartened. This is because Shahana Goswami-starrer Santosh is still in the race and might surprise. Along with Shahana, Sunita Rajwar also starred in a crucial role in this thriller drama, which was directed by Sandhya Suri.
