A 5.7-magnitude earthquake hit the border area between Panama and Costa Rica on Monday, according to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ).
The seismic event occurred at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles), as reported by GFZ. The tremor was felt in the surrounding regions, but there were no immediate reports of significant damage or casualties.
Following the powerful seismic event that struck the Chiriqui province, Panama’s National Civil Protection System has deployed response units across the region to assess the situation. In a statement on X, the agency said, “Our response units are in different parts of the province of Chiriqui conducting monitoring, after the strong seismic movement recorded in the region.”
According to the Institute of Geosciences at the University of Panama, a 5.9 magnitude aftershock was detected in the aftermath of the initial quake. As of now, there have been no reports of significant damage resulting from either the main seismic event or the subsequent aftershock. Authorities continue to closely monitor the situation and gather information from various locations within the affected area.
