A wall of a 400-year-old fort in MP‘s Datia collapsed in heavy rain Wednesday, killing seven of a family.
Neighbours saved two persons but couldn’t reach the others. With heavy vehicles unable to enter the narrow approach road, rescuers had to work with bare hands and shovels to remove tonnes of earth and massive blocks of stone – designed to withstand cannon shots. The collapsed wall, known as Diwar Shahar Panha, was built in 1629 atop a hillock.
It was slated for demolition as part of a ring road construction project, but encroachment around the heritage structure had complicated the situation. Locals were worried about its stability after incessant rain this monsoon.
