PUDUCHERRY/CHENNAI: New Year revelry turned tragic when eight people aged between 15 and 26 years drowned in Bay of Bengal in Puducherry and Tamil Nadu in three different incidents on Sunday.
Puducherry police said four persons, three of them schoolchildren, came to the Rock Beach on Sunday afternoon. As the four ventured into sea, a giant wave dragged them in.Local fishermen tried to save them, but in vain.
In Tamil Nadu, the bodies of four youths who had drowned in two different incidents were recovered in Mamallapuram and Uthandi. In Uthandi, two youths aged 25 and 26 drowned when they sneaked into a beach despite being warned by policemen. At Mamallapuram, two college students were washed away when they left their bicycles on the shore and frolicked in the waters.
