VILLUPURAM: Nine lemons spiked on the sacred spear of the deity in TN’s Villupuram temple fetched Rs 2.36 lakh at an auction on Tuesday. Devotees believe that consuming lemonade made from these lemons cures infertility and brings prosperity to families.
“The temple is famous for its sacred lemons. People strongly believe that the lemons spiked in Lord Muruga’s spear have magical powers,” said a villager.
Scores of childless couples visit Lord Muruga at a small temple locatd at the confluence of two hillocks at Tiruvanainallur village in Villupuram during the annual Panguni Uthiram festival and vie for the lemons auctioned by the temple management.
“Childless couples buy the lemons as there is a strong belief that the lemon cures infertility. Traders and businessmen buy the lemon seeking prosperity in their business ventures,” said another villager.
During the nine days of the festival, the temple priests spike a lemon each day. The temple management auctions the lemons on the last day of the festival. The lemon spiked on the spear on the first day of the festival is believed to be the “most auspicious and powerful”. A couple from Kulathur village bought the lemon for Rs 50,500. People who successfully bid for the lemons took a holy bath and received them after kneeling before the temple priests.
