NEW DELHI: Congress MP and the leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said that approximately 90% of the population, despite having the required skills and talents, remains disconnected from the system and that’s why there is a demand for a caste census.
Speaking in an event at Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress leader said: “90% of the people are not a part of the system. They have the required skill, talent but they are not connected with the system. That’s why we are demanding a caste census. BJP leaders are saying that an OBC section will be given after the caste census.”
Rahul continued that caste census is seen as a means to better understand the socio-economic conditions of various communities and to ensure that benefits reach those who need them the most.
He further explains how the caste census, if implemented, could provide valuable data to inform policy decisions stating that, “We want the list of different communities. For us the caste census is not just a census, it is a foundation for policy making…Just conducting a caste census is not enough, it is also important to understand how the wealth is being distributed.”
“It is also important to find out how much is the participation of OBCs, Dalits, workers in the bureaucracy, judiciary, media?” he said.
“I will go ahead with the agenda of caste-based census, socio-economical and institutional survey at any cost, even if it cost me personal political loss, ” he added.
