Less than one week is left for the mega clash between Rajkummar Rao-Shraddha Kapoor’s horror comedy Stree 2, John Abraham-Sharvari’s mass action entertainer Vedaa and Akshay Kumar’s multi-starrer comedy Khel Khel Mein. We asked trade experts what the buzz looks like a week before release.
Less than one week to go for the Independence Day releases; trade experts feel that Stree 2’s buzz is tremendous: “In metro areas, Khel Khel Mein can have an edge. But Vedaa will have an advantage as it has an appeal in tier-2 and tier-3 cities”
Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said, “My first choice or rather my first to 10th choice would be Stree 2! The trailer has become a rage and every second reel you see on Instagram has the song ‘Aaj Ki Raat’. Hence, Stree 2 by a distance will have the advantage.”
He further said, “The second position is taken by Vedaa. I loved its trailer. When a film has an emotional undercurrent, it all depends on how you depict it on screen and in Nikkhil Advani, I trust. The pairing looks different and it’s not a run-of-the-mill casting.”
He added, “Khel Khel Mein would be my third choice. It’s also looking nice though.”
Girish Johar, producer and film business analyst, said, “The number one film is Stree 2. It is standing miles ahead of the other two releases. It’ll take a huge start.”
He added, “Khel Khel Mein is based on a French film and it’s already being remade in multiple languages across the world. The target audience is urban intelligentsia and they might have probably watched this kind of film already. But having said that, it has an ensemble cast. And that cast will draw some audiences over the holiday weekend.”
He also stated, “As for Vedaa, John Abraham and Nikkhil Advani are big brands. Sharvari is on cloud nine. It has a larger wider audience. Depending on how the promotions cut across the moviegoers, we can get a clearer picture. But it is a bit ahead. In metro areas, Khel Khel Mein can have an edge. But by and large, Vedaa will have an advantage as it has an appeal in tier-2 and tier-3 cities.”
Trade analyst Atul Mohan remarked, “Stree 2 is number 1 for sure. It’ll also get maximum showcasing. As for Vedaa and Khel Khel Mein, both are neck-to-neck. It’s too early to say (which one will emerge in the second position).”
Distributor and exhibitor Raj Bansal, meanwhile, revealed, “Stree 2 takes the cake. As of today, Khel Khel Mein seems to be in the second position followed by Vedaa.”
Opening Day predictions
Can Stree 2 collect Rs. 25 crores on the day of release and have a lifetime of more than Rs. 200 crores? Taran Adarsh felt that there is a possibility, “It’s a long holiday weekend. Whichever film turns out good, its business potential can be tremendous.”
He added, “For Vedaa and Khel Khel Mein, the audience would first check reports and then buy the ticket. But agar mujhe aankh bandh karke jaana hai, I’d opt for Stree 2.”
Atul Mohan opined, “Stree 2 looks to be having a Rs. 20 crore day. Rs. 200 crore lifetime is also possible as it has two long weekends.”
Girish Johar, however, said, “Rs. 15 crores day one seems like a possibility. Next week, we will get a better idea about the day 1 estimates.”
