NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to join the world leaders at the upcoming Quad summit in the US later this month. The meeting is expected to take place in US President Joe Biden‘s hometown Wilmington, Delaware, on September 21. The summit will address pressing global issues, including the situation in Ukraine.
The summit will see PM Modi, Australian PM Anthony Albanese, and Japanese PM Fumio Kishida meet in the US.The leaders will attend the UN’s Summit of the Future in New York on September 22 and 23, where PM Modi is scheduled to address an Indian community event and engage in discussions with various world leaders.
The upcoming Quad summit was scheduled to be held in India, however, a more convenient location was opted for members due to tight schedules. India is anticipated to host the summit next year instead.
The Quad summit is expected to focus on enhancing cooperation among the member nations in the Indo-Pacific region and tackling major global challenges. In July, the foreign ministers of the Quad nations met in Tokyo to advance cooperation in the Indo-Pacific and reaffirm their commitment to a free and open region, free from coercion. They also announced plans to expand the Indo-Pacific Maritime Domain Awareness (IPMDA) programme to the Indian Ocean, aiming to improve monitoring of strategic waters.
The Summit of the Future will gather leaders from various countries to forge a new international consensus on creating a “better present and safeguarding the future”, according to the UN.
