Ashwin Ramaswami, a 25-year-old Democrat, has entered the race for a seat in the Georgia State Senate after he realised that the incumbent state senator for his hometown, Johns Creek, was among the 18 individuals indicted alongside former President Donald Trump last year. The charges allege that they illegally interfered with the 2020 election results in Georgia.
Despite the challenges posed by the Republican-leaning Senate District 48, Ramaswami’s campaign serves as a test for the Democrats’ stance that anyone who tried to alter the 2020 election outcome is unfit for public office.
According to the New York Times, Ramaswami has been actively campaigning, going door-to-door to persuade voters that Still should not continue in government. At a recent campaign event in Suwanee, Ramaswami emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and order, stating, “We have to play by the rules, and we have to have rule of law and order. That’s the only way we can have a democracy.”
Born to parents who immigrated from Tamil Nadu in 1990, Ramaswami left his job in election security at CISA to run against Still. He has already raised more than USD 280,000 in his grassroots campaign, surpassing his opponent’s fundraising efforts. As a representative of the Generation Z demographic, Ramaswami is focusing on expanding healthcare access and investing in housing options after graduating from Georgetown University in May.
