JAMMU: A young soldier enlisted through the Agniveer scheme was killed and two of his Army colleagues were wounded in a landmine explosion Thursday morning along LoC in Nowshera sector of J&K’s Rajouri district, security sources said. This marks the Army’s first on-duty casualty in Jammu region in 2024.
“A soldier from a morning patrol inadvertently stepped on a landmine, wounding him and two more. He suffered fatal wounds. All three were taken to the military hospital in Udhampur, where the critically wounded jawan died,” a source said.
According to sources, the fallen soldier was identified as Ajay Singh from Ludhiana, while Sepoy Balwant Singh and Naib Subedar Dharminder Singh are receiving treatment for leg and splinter wounds, respectively. There has been no official confirmation of the explosion and fatality at the time of this report.
This adds to military fatalities in Jammu region, following a terrorist ambush on two Army vehicles in Poonch district on Dec 21, where four soldiers lost their lives. Just a month earlier, security forces faced five fatalities in adjoining Rajouri sector. Both frontier districts of Rajouri and Poonch have recorded a concerning rise in Army fatalities, with 35 reported since Oct 2021. The toll for 2023 alone stood at 21, making up 60% of the total.
