HYDERABAD: Telangana attracted 141 investments totaling nearly Rs 36,000 crore in the life sciences (LS) sector over the past year, with the state government set to introduce a dedicated LS policy by the end of the year, said IT and Industries minister Duddilla Sridhar Babu on Thursday.
These investments, made by global companies such as Cigna’s Evernorth, Amgen, Zoetis, BMS, Sanofi, HCA Healthcare, and Olympus through the establishment of global capability centers (GCCs) and innovation hubs, along with manufacturing and R&D investments by Indian firms like Hetero Labs, Aragen, and Laurus Labs, are expected to create around 51,000 direct jobs and another 1.5 lakh indirect jobs, he added.
Providing a detailed breakdown, Babu said that in the past 10-11 months, Telangana attracted 59 pharma manufacturing investments, 49 pharma formulation and R&D-related investments, 13 GCCs, nine investments in vaccines, biosimilars, and biotech, six in medical devices and healthcare, and three for creating plug-and-play infrastructure and lab spaces in Genome Valley.
The largest investments include Vivint Pharma’s Rs 4,000 crore for a new injectables factory expected to employ 1,000 people, Sanofi’s Rs 3,600 crore GCC expansion creating 2,600 jobs, Amgen’s new GCC with over 3,000 jobs, and Japanese giant Takeda’s collaboration with Biological E to set up facilities for producing five crore dengue vaccines annually.
Sridhar Babu noted that the state government, soon to complete its first year, is preparing to unveil a dedicated life sciences policy, to be launched by Chief Minister A Reventh Reddy. “Before the end of December, we will roll out this dedicated LS policy to attract new players to Telangana during BioAsia 2025. The policy will streamline processes, encourage investment, foster innovation, and support sustainable growth in this key sector. It is designed to meet the evolving needs of the LS industry and solidify Telangana’s position as a major hub in the global LS value chain,” he explained.
The minister also mentioned that following the Telangana global AI summit earlier this year, the government is now launching sector-specific AI conferences. The first, a day-long convention titled Catalyst of Change: AI in Healthcare, is scheduled for November 18 to explore AI’s potential to transform healthcare.
