Tension prevailed on the Chevella–Bijapur highway on Tuesday as locals and political party representatives staged a protest demanding road widening between TSPA junction and Manneguda of National Highway 163.
This followed a major road accident on Monday evening which claimed the life of four persons and left three injured. A speeding lorry ran over vegetable vendors on the Chevella road in Aloor.
Around 11 a.m. on Tuesday, about 200-300 people including local residents and representatives of various political parties took out a rally from Chevella bus stand to agriculture market yard and back. Later they staged a protest at NH 163 that lasted about an hour, Chevella Sub-Inspector Srikanth Reddy, who is also the investigating officer for the case, said.
The protesters asked the concerned authorities to immediately start the road widening work as well as demanding compensation for the families of individuals who were killed in the accident.
About 100 police officials across all ranks were present for bandobast to prevent any untoward incident.
