AHMEDABAD: Morbi tragedy victims on Saturday filed a PIL in Supreme Court and demanded constitution of an SIT to probe the Vadodara boat capsise incident in which 14 people – 12 schoolchildren and two teachers – lost their lives two days ago during a school picnic in Harni lake.
Highlighting the tragedy at a public place due to negligence of the administration, the Tragedy Victims’ Association, Morbi, demanded an independent probe not by the local police, who “conduct hurried and shoddy investigation” aggravating the injustice caused to the victims. The petitioner has also urged the apex court to constitute an expert committee, which can examine the reasons behind repeated occurrence of tragedies at public facilities. The committee can also examine the role of state players and private contractors in such accidents, and lay down guidelines for fixing liability and adequate compensation for victims.
The petition cited 11 cases of bridge collapse and 12 instances of boat capsising in the last decade and pointed out that many of these tragedies have “a common template, which calls for a coordinated and systemic solution on an urgent basis”, said the association’s advocate Utkarsh Dave.On Oct 30, 2022, the Morbi suspension bridge collapsed and 135 people lost their lives. Relatives of 112 victims got together to form the association to put up a legal fight for justice.
