In a chilling case of crime, Jharsuguda police in Odisha arrested a man accused of murdering a young woman, dismembering her body, and scattering the pieces across multiple locations in order to escape from police investigation and prevent her from testifying against him in court.
The man, identified as Kunu Kisan, was arrested by Jharsuguda police. Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused had carried out the horrific act to silence girl who had accused hum of raping.
Acting on a report of missing of 18-year-old girl on December 7, Jharsuguda police had begun its investigation to trace her. But, it turned out to be sinister murder committed cold bloodedly
“When the photo of the missing girl was searched through the artificial intelligence feature of the Jharsuguda Smart City CCTV system, it was found that the girl went with two persons on a two-wheeler vehicle,” Jharsuguda Superintendent of Police Parmar Smit Parshottamdas said.
“Using technical forensics and CCTV footage of neighbouring areas, the accused who hailed from Sundargarh police district was traced and was brought to the police station. On evidence based interrogation, Kunu Kisan confessed that he had killed the missing girl and disposed off her body after cutting it into small parts,” Jharsuguda SP said.
According to police, the young woman had filed a case of rape against the accused person in Dharuadihi police station of Sundargarh. He was subsequently arrested on August 27, 2023. The man was released on bail on December 4.
“The accused person started believing that he would be convicted for sure if the deceased would give a statement in court. The accused hatched the conspiracy to kill the deceased person to ensure that she would not be able to give any statement in court. He earlier tried to convince her to give a favourable statement, but the deceased denied,” the police said.
The way the deceased was seated on a two-wheeler indicated that the accused had somehow convinced her to go with him. The man killed the deceased near NH 143 – Rourkela – Deogarh road under Lathikatha police station. He cut the young woman’s body by himself and burnt down the head. Based on his confession, the police recovered body parts from Tarkera Nali, a drain, and Brahmani River near Dharuadihi.
Before carrying out the murder, the man had taken precautions by changing the number plate and stickers of his bike and had a helmet during the whole journey. “A DNA test will be done to establish identity of deceased scientifically. Jharsuguda Police will submit the charge-sheet without delay and would go for the speedy trial of the case,” Mr. Parmar said.
