Twenty-eight fishermen from Idinthakarai, a fishing hamlet in Tirunelveli district, who were detained by Bahrain authorities on September 11 for allegedly crossing the maritime boundary, have been released. They arrived at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport in Kerala late on Wednesday (December 18, 2024) night, Tamil Nadu Fisheries department officials said.
Owing to various measures taken by the Union and State governments, the imprisonment term of fishermen was reduced from six months to three months. Earlier this month, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said that the 28 detained fishermen would return to India after completing their repatriation-related formalities.
Upon their arrival, the fishermen were received by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Speaker M. Appavu and Tirunelveli MP C. Robert Bruce.
Fr. Churchill, general secretary of South Asian Fishermen Fraternity, expressed his gratitude to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Mr. Jaishankar, the Embassy of India in Kuwait, Mr. Appavu, and Mr. Bruce for their efforts in securing the release of the fishermen.
