The resurgence of Congress in Punjab has brought optimism among Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), particularly those affiliated with the Indian Overseas Congress (IOC) as many of them had traveled to Punjab to campaign for their loved ones contesting the elections are now planning to develop new political strategies aimed at advancing the welfare of the people hoping to form Congress government in Punjab following 2027 assembly elections.
“Congress has secured a victory in Amritsar and Phagwara, and its strong performance in other municipal corporations such as Ludhiana and Jalandhar, clearly reflects the growing public disillusionment with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). We have urged our leaders and workers to remain committed to people-centric politics, focusing on providing support and assistance, especially in times of need”, said Rajwinder Singh, Coordinator of the Indian Overseas Congress (IOC), Europe, on Sunday.
“AAP has raised false hopes and made unrealistic promises to the people, but the reality is that it is losing ground, and the public has increasingly turned to Congress over other political parties,” alleged Jeewan Padda from Belgium, who has been closely monitoring the efforts of IOC workers who have arrived in Punjab for campaigning.
Alighted over the resurgence of Congress in Punjab, Kamal Dhaliwal , IOC UK president questioned, how long the AAP will continue to befool people. “Their leaders are making hefty claims of making people-friendly policies for ‘aam aadmi’ , the election results have proved the otherwise”, said he.
When asked about Congress securing victory only in the Amritsar and Phagwra Municipal Corporation elections, he alleged, “It is well known how the ruling party has been exploiting government machinery to ensure the success of their candidates. Despite these challenges, Congress has still delivered a strong performance,” he stated.
“Congress leaders based abroad are satisfied over the party’s strong performance in the recent municipal corporation elections in Punjab. We in Europe and other regions, are optimistic about party’s prospects in the state, and are of the view that if the party continues to expose the alleged misdeeds of the AAP, it could pave the way for Congress to form the government in Punjab in the future”, said he.
Rajwinder further said that IOC members who have been actively involved in campaigning and supporting the party’s initiatives are celebrating the positive outcomes, especially in key municipalities such as Amritsar.
“Encouraged by the results, we are planning to hold a virtual meeting in the coming days to discuss strategies for further strengthen the party’s position in the state and how they could play their role in strengthening the party in Punjab ahead of assembly elections,” he said.
