A sloth bear was captured from Yedakkadu village near Kundha in the Nilgiris and released in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) by the Forest Department staff on Sunday.

The Department had set up cages at Sathyamoorthy Nagar after the death of a 35-year-old man from a suspected bear attack in the area recently. Following its capture on Sunday, veterinarians from the Forest Department checked the sloth bear’s health before its release in the Theppakadu Forest Range in MTR.

A sloth bear, believed to be the one caught on Sunday, is said to have been breaking into buildings in search of food in the area. Following the man’s death, a decision was taken to trap and release the animal.
