Gurgaon: A day after a 50-year-old businessman was shot dead in Hayatpur, one of the shooters was arrested. Police are probing the business rivalry angle.
On Wednesday, Crime Branch sleuths, along with Sector 10 police, arrested Tekchand alias Mohit — a resident of Kheda Khurampur — from Najafgarh for the murder of Baljeet Singh Yadav, who ran a liquor business in Jhajjar. Baljeet also operated a tiles and crane rental business in the city.
“The accused will be produced before the court and taken on police remand,” a Gurgaon police spokesperson said.
The body of Baljeet was handed over to his family after the autopsy on Wednesday. A forensic medicine expert said that Baljeet suffered five bullet injuries, one in the arm and four in his torso. Two bullets were recovered from the body.
At 4pm on Tuesday, when Baljeet was at his office in Hayatpur with five others — including his nephew and business partner Dinesh Yadav — two armed assailants arrived and fired multiple shots at Baljeet, who was lying down. The duo fled the scene after firing the shots. Baljeet died at a private hospital later.
Two other Hayatpur residents who were present at the office, Ravinder (27) and Ram Kaushik (32), also sustained injuries. “Ravinder suffered a bullet injury in his neck. He is recuperating at a private hospital. Ram sustained a minor injury to his leg,” Sector 10 inspector Rajbir Singh said.
Baljeet’s nephew Dinesh Yadav told police that Baljeet took several liquor contracts in Jhajjar during the last year. “Previously, another group consisting of Om Bhagwan, Deepak, Mohit Bhuria and Naresh Sethi used to take those liquor contracts. The other group bore a grudge against Baljeet for taking the contracts and shot him dead,” the complainant alleged.
On his complaint, a case was registered under sections 103 (1) (murder), 61 (criminal conspiracy) and 3 (5) (common intention) of the BNS and the Arms Act at Sector 10 police station on Tuesday night.
Baljeet’s uncle Charan Singh said that the two assailants came to the office at Jotram Chowk in Hayatpur, inquiring about renting a crane. “They wanted to meet Dinesh Yadav. At that time, both Baljeet and Dinesh were lying down in the office. Ravinder, who was sitting in the office, told the duo that Dinesh was sleeping and asked them to talk to the workers. The duo pulled out firearms and fired at Baljeet. We suspect that they might have mistaken him for Dinesh. Baljeet and Dinesh are business partners,” Charan Singh said.
In his complaint, Dinesh also reiterated that the assailants came inquiring about him when he was asleep at the office, but police said that they are yet to verify if the assailants who wanted to target Dinesh mistakenly killed his uncle and business partner Baljeet.
