Sunny Deol, the powerhouse of Bollywood, recently appeared on a podcast with Komal Nahta to candidly discuss events from his life and his upcoming film Jaat which is set to hit theatres on April 10.
Sunny Deol on setbacks after Gadar, “I was directing, producing, and managing too many things”
After the massive success of Gadar: Ek Prem Katha in 2001, the actor’s career hit a rough patch. He struggled to find new opportunities and his films failed to attract audiences. However, Gadar 2 revitalised the box office for Sunny, re-establishing him as a dominant force in the industry.
Looking back at his career slump, Sunny admitted, “After Gadar, my shop shut down. And then Gadar 2 reopened it.” He acknowledged that taking on multiple roles and responsibilities contributed to his downfall. “I was directing, producing, and managing too many things. In the process, I lost focus on my true passion—acting.” After his son’s debut film Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas (2019), he made a firm decision. “I told myself, ‘I won’t do anything else. I just want to be an actor.’ And that’s when things started to change.”
Speaking about Gadar 2, the actor revealed that the idea of making a sequel to cult classic Gadar initially sparked skepticism. “The first film was so loved. What if we ruined what people cherished?” However, after hearing the script, he knew it was the right move. “We stayed true to the characters, the emotions, and the era. We didn’t try to unnecessarily modernize it. If we had, the film might have fallen flat.”
Despite his setbacks, the actor never felt insecure and always believed in making a comeback. “I am not someone who gets insecure. If one thing doesn’t work, I’ll do something else. I always believed that when my time comes, I will rise again.” He also acknowledged the industry’s changing landscape. “People said action films wouldn’t work in multiplexes, and maybe that’s why I got fewer offers. But I never stopped believing in myself. I am not someone who stops. If one path is blocked, I’ll find another”, he added.
