NEW DELHI: The Jharkhand high court has slated the hearing for the plea filed by former chief minister Hemant Soren on February 5. Soren has challenged his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in an alleged land scam case.
Previously, the high court had granted the Enforcement Directorate five-day custody of Soren in connection with the case. The arrest came after several summons were issued to Hemant Soren and several hours of questioning by the ED.
In the midst of the political unrest in Jharkhand, Champai Soren has been sworn in as the new chief minister of Jharkhand on Friday at the Raj Bhavan in Ranchi.
Earlier today, a special court in Ranchi granted former Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren permission to take part in the special session for trust vote on February 5.
The former chief minister Soren on Friday moved the Supreme Court to challenge his arrest by the ED in the land deal case. However, the court declined to entertain his plea and directed him to approach the relevant high court with his petition. The Supreme Court stated that it is open for Hemant Soren to urge the high court to expedite the case.
Hemant Soren has challenged the summons issued by the ED on January 22, 2024, and January 25, 2024, under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002. He has requested the court to declare the summons as illegal and nullify them, along with all the steps taken and proceedings arising from them.
Hemant Soren has alleged that he has been constantly harassed by the ED and accused the probe agency of misusing its authority and powers for political purposes. The investigation pertains to the alleged forging of official records to acquire valuable land through fraudulent means.
