All is set for the relaunch of Amaravati capital works by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 2. The Prime Minister will be laying the foundation for construction of five towers of the Amaravati Government Complex, High Court, Legislative Assembly Building, etc.
Ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit to Amaravati, Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development P. Narayana told The Hindu on Tuesday that the government aimed at completing the construction of the capital city as per the master plan in three years.
Mr. Narayana said the AP Capital Region Development Authority (APCRDA) had approved projects worth more than ₹64,000 crore, of which works costing ₹43,000 crore were awarded to contractors.
He said the Prime Minister would lay stone for works such as 250-ft.-high Amaravati iconic structure, Amaravati Government Complex, comprising a 50-storey GAD tower and four other towers for the 4-storey Secretariat, seven-storey High Court building, and Assembly building. He would also lay stone for 4,000 flats in various apartment complexes, social infrastructure facilities such as seed access road, trunk roads, layout roads, NTR statue, Happy Nest, etc.
The APCRDA completed more than 80% works related to the arrangements for the Prime Minister’s programme, the Minister said, adding that all government complexes would come up in an extent of 1,450 acres.
Tenders had been called for works costing about ₹41,000 crore, and ₹5,000 crore released to the contractors before 2019, the Minister said. The change in guard led to legal, financial, social and administrative problems, Mr. Narayana added.
He alleged that by proposing three capitals, the previous YSRCP government destroyed the progress of works, and it took almost nine months for the NDA government to overcome the hurdles.
He said additional land was required for construction of the airport, sprots city, inner ring road, outer ring road, connecting roads from Amaravati to the National Highway and other roads.
Mr. Narayana said the government gave away developed plots to the LPS farmers in the 217 sq. km of the core capital city. He said the local MLAs suggested that land be pooled for the additional projects under the LPS to benefit the farmers. On the other hand, the government was also going for acquisition in certain areas where road connectivity was required, he said.
He said the airport would be located between IRR and ORR, depending on the suggestion of the authorities concerned.
When asked whether the Prime Minister would lay foundation for works such as airport and other projects too, Mr. Narayana said it would take some more time for that. The Prime Minister would, however, dedicate the Amaravati capital city to the people in three years, he asserted.
“The Prime Minister has been extending all support for the development of Amaravati capital and providing financial support as well,” Mr. Narayana said.
