The Bharatiya Janata Party and Rashtriya Janata Dal sparred over a viral video of Lalu Prasad concerning the portrait of Dr BR Ambedkar, trading accusations of disrespecting the Dalit icon.
“Yeh chitra nahi, RJD ka charitra hai (this is not a picture, but a character of RJD),” BJP leader Amit Malviya posted on X on Sunday, sharing the image of the incident.
The RJD hit back with a jibe at the BJP, alleging that the saffron party is “forced to talk about social justice” only because of Lalu Prasad.
This comes after a huge controversy erupted in Bihar, months ahead of the Assembly polls, in which a purported video, recorded during Lalu’s 78th birthday celebrations, showed him sitting on a couch with his feet on a nearby sofa and a supporter enters the room carrying Ambedkar’s portrait and places it near his feet before greeting him.
The incident drew sharp criticism from the ruling BJP, which accused the Opposition party of insulting Ambedkar.
Addressing a press conference on Sunday, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister demanded accountability from the RJD.
Bihar State Commission for Scheduled Castes also issued a notice to the RJD chief for allegedly disrespecting Ambedkar and gave him 15 days to respond. It warned that failure to reply may lead to legal proceedings.
Responding to the notice, Tejashwi Yadav, leader of the opposition in the Bihar Assembly, dubbed the move as politically motivated.
“There have been so many cases of atrocities against Dalits that the Commission has ignored. But since we oppose the BJP, we are being subjected to intimidatory tactics,” he said.
