Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has introduced a new service which enables doorstep delivery of SIM cards. The state-owned telecom operator has launched a new online portal which allows consumers to get SIM cards delivered to their home without leaving the premises. Consumers can choose between prepaid and postpaid SIM connection options. They will be required to carry out a self KYC (know your customer) verification before the SIM card delivery can be completed.

BSNL SIM Card Home Delivery Services

BSNL’s new portal can be accessed here. Consumers can get a new connection with a new number when purchasing a SIM card. Alternatively, the telecom operator also allows them to port their existing numbers from other service providers to BSNL.

Customers are required to fill out a customer registration form for KYC where it presents the choice between a postpaid or a prepaid SIM card. The portal asks for the following information when opting for the BSNL SIM card home delivery service:

  1. PIN Code
  2. Name of Applicant
  3. Alternate Mobile Number

Once the information is entered, an OTP is sent to the alternate mobile phone number for confirmation. The telecom operator says consumers can contact the helpline number 1800-180-1503 for any doubts or queries.

With this move, BSNL has joined private players such as Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea (Vi) in the Indian telecom sector to offer home delivery of SIM cards. However, it remains unknown if the home delivery service is free of cost or entails any charge. All three private telecom operators offer this service free of cost.

The SIM card home delivery service comes at a time when BSNL is losing its subscriber momentum. According to latest telecom subscription data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), it lost 0.2 million overall subscribers and 1.8 million active subscribers in April.

The lowest VLR (Visitor Location Register) ratio for BSNL, a key indicator of a mobile network’s active usage, was recorded at 61.4 percent.
