The unrest stemmed from ongoing agitation by women in Sandeshkhali, who accuse TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh and his associates of perpetrating atrocities against them.
Tensions escalated when BJP activists, led by Majumdar, clashed with law enforcement on Tuesday in Basirhat as their protest was thwarted. In a chaotic scene, party members breached barricades and entered the village, prompting police to resort to force to disperse them. Following the altercation, Majumdar and several demonstrators were briefly detained before being released.
“The TMC does not mean Trinamool Congress but Taliban Mansikta Culture. On one hand, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee talks about ‘Ma Mati Manush’, on the other, the state has become ‘bandh, balatkari and bomb’. Shahjahan Sheikh is roaming freely,” he said.
Reacting to the news of injured Majumdar, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said, “The TMC does not mean Trinamool Congress but Taliban Mansikta Culture. On one hand, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee talks about ‘Ma Mati Manush’, on the other, the state has become ‘bandh, balatkari and bomb’. Shahjahan Sheikh is roaming freely.”
The West Bengal government have reimposed section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) in and around 500 metres of area in seven-gram panchayats, including Sandeshkhali.
