CHENNAI: Police have arrested a gym trainer on suspicion that he faked his own death by murdering a man who matched his description to claim an insurance payout. Two of the gym trainer’s friends have also been arrested as cops believe they participated in the murder plot.
In September 2023, Ayanavaram-based gym trainer Suresh (38) hatched a plan to fake his own death and claim Rs 1 crore in life insurance that would come to his family in case of his death, as per the cops. The plan failed because the police recorded a suicide case and the insurance company rejected the payout claim.
He, along with two of his friends, started searching for a person with a physical resemblance to Suresh, and identified his former tenant, Dillibabu, as a potential body double.
The three took Dillibabu to Puducherry for a drinking session. He was then allegedly taken to a farm hut belonging to Suresh’s family. The farm hut was burnt down with Dillibabu in it, cops claimed. While Suresh absconded, his family believed he had died in the fire and conducted his last rites.
The twist came when police registered a case of suicide, relying on information provided by Suresh’s sister Jayashree. Citing the FIR, the insurance company denied the family an insurance payout, saying the rules did not allow payment of the insured sum in case of death by suicide.
Elsewhere Dillibabu’s mother, Leelavathy, was desperately searching for her missing son and moved Madras high court with a habeas corpus petition. Cops came to know that Dillibabu was last seen with Suresh. Acting on this clue, police went to Suresh’s village, where his relatives said he was dead. However, when cops traced some of his friends, they got vital leads. A short time later, police apprehended Suresh.
