NEW DELHI: Bayern Munich emerged victorious with a 2-0 win over Cologne on Saturday, aiming to regain momentum ahead of their Champions League return leg against Arsenal. Despite recent league setbacks, Bayern showcased resilience, but suffered a major blow with winger Kingsley Coman sidelined due to injury.
With Bayer Leverkusen poised to secure the Bundesliga title, Bayern’s focus has shifted to the Champions League following their draw with Arsenal in the first leg. However, their hopes were dampened as Coman sustained an adductor muscle injury, ruling him out for several weeks.
Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel expressed disappointment over Coman’s injury, stating, “The injury of Kingsley is extremely bitter with him starting a game today after a very long time. It looked extremely painful… It’s a big blow for us.”
Despite the setback, Bayern remains second in the Bundesliga with 63 points, with VfB Stuttgart joining them after a 3-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt. Meanwhile, RB Leipzig secured a 3-0 victory over VfL Wolfsburg, maintaining fourth place ahead of Borussia Dortmund.
In their match against Cologne, Bayern dominated from the start, creating numerous scoring opportunities in the first half. However, it was Raphael Guerreiro’s superb curling shot in the 65th minute that broke the deadlock, putting Bayern ahead.
A late save from goalkeeper Sven Ulreich preserved Bayern’s lead before Thomas Mueller capitalized on a defensive error in stoppage time to seal the win.
Despite the victory, Bayern’s joy was tempered by Coman’s injury setback. The club confirmed that the French winger would be sidelined for several weeks, dealing a blow to their Champions League aspirations.
As Bayern prepare for their crucial clash with Arsenal, they will need to regroup and overcome the absence of Coman to keep their European dreams alive. With the Bundesliga title out of reach, Bayern’s focus shifts entirely to their pursuit of Champions League glory.
