ALIGARH: A man was lynched by a mob in the Mamu Bhanja locality of Aligarh around 10.30am on Tuesday, sparking outrage and protests across the city. Videos of the brutal murder, with the helpless man on the ground even as a group of people rain blows on him, spread quickly on social media triggering shock and condemnation.
Police have identified and arrested six persons from the mob of at least 22 individuals who assaulted Mohammad Farid alias Aurangzeb, 35, with wooden sticks and lathis, punching and kicking him even as he writhed on the roadside. In a video that surfaced later, a police officer is also seen carrying the victim on his shoulders to a hospital.
While police said the mob lynched Aurangzeb, who made rotis at weddings and get-togethers, after he “broke into the house” of textiles trader Mukesh Chand Mittal and was confronted by his family members and neighbours, his brother, Mohammad Zaki, in his complaint to the police, identified the six arrested and said the group attacked him “only after finding out he was a Muslim”.
The deceased’s family – his brother, sister, and mother – have demanded strict action against the culprits.
Aligarh SP Mrigank Shekhar Pathak said, “A group of individuals beat a person with sticks. The victim died on the way to the hospital. Preliminary investigations suggest the attackers suspected the deceased of entering Mittal’s house with the intent to steal. Our investigation is continuing, and we are reviewing CCTV footage. The body has been sent for autopsy.”
