The veil between worlds lifts in the captivating trailer for Barzakh, a new Pakistani series that promises a unique blend of magical realism, supernatural fantasy, and poignant family drama. Directed by Asim Abbasi, the visionary filmmaker behind Churails and Cake, Barzakh delves into themes of love, loss, and the enduring power of connection. Barzakh also marks the highly anticipated reunion of Fawad Khan and Sanam Saeed, two of Pakistan’s biggest stars, who haven’t shared the screen in over a decade. Their on-screen chemistry was the talk of the sub-continent when Zindagi Gulzar Hai dropped over a decade ago. However, Saeed says that this is a different story altogether and audiences would be surprised to see their dynamic onscreen.
EXCLUSIVE: Sanam Saeed reveals auditioning for Bazarkh; reuniting with Fawad Khan after a decade: “That mutual respect and love for what we do…”
Speaking exclusively to Bollywood Hungama about the much-talked-about reunion, Sanam Saeed said, “Well, we are coming back together after 11 years, but we’re coming back together in a very different situation. So, brace yourselves for the dynamic that we are going to be in now because it’s not going to be something that you’ve seen before. It’s going to be very new and different and not at all what you were all expecting.”
She added, “It’s an ensemble cast with such strong performances by Salman Shahid and both Fawad Khan and M. Fawad Khan. The Fawad Khan you are familiar with rules the stream but the Fawad Khan I have acted with, M Fawad Khan, is just the most phenomenal theatre actor and therefore actor in all these indie projects because he just brings something that I’ve never seen any other actor bring. He’s like our Nawazuddin Siddiqui.”
Sanam Saeed continued, “No matter what mine and Fawad Khan’s dynamic is, the story is so intricate and so layered; the performances, each one captures the scene and kind of takes over that moment that hopefully people will forget about the pairing that is coming back. Because it is coming in this situation and hope people are able to digest it.”
Praising her co-star, she added, “It is going to be endearing for people to see Fawad doing this role. He is playing a day, not the hero ‘hero’. He’s playing a very complex character. And I think people need to see that for them to break that kind of fourth wall and resonate with him as a performer and resonate with him as a really deeply emotional, emotionally troubled character in this project, as opposed to the perfect hero if life is great for him. It is important for him to play that role. I’m glad to share the screen with him again, of course, no matter what, in what way we come on screen, it’s always good to share that space with him because there’s just this energy that we both feed off of. That mutual respect and love for what we do, I think comes through and I enjoy that.”
Asim Abbasi said in an interview that Saeed’s stoicism and accessibility on-screen draw people to watch her. When asked about it in the same interview, Sanam Saeed said, “I did give an audition for the role. Asim said that he had me in mind when he wrote this, but I still did the audition,” she said, “It is important because, in your head, you can think this person is good for it. But you must see two or three other people and you’re like, ‘Oh, my God, I never thought of her. But actually, she’s fitting it.’ Asim said, ‘You know, I did have you in mind when I wrote this.’ I was like, ‘Okay, because it wouldn’t have made sense to tell me before when I was auditioning.’ So, I think, to answer your question, that’s why these kinds of roles come to me. And do I think I’m stoic? Not at all. I very indecisive, very confused, and very unsure like we all are, but I’m calm. There’s a sense of peace and calm and belief in what I’m doing. I think that’s what draws them.”
Set against the awe-inspiring backdrop of the Hunza Valley, the series transports viewers to a place where the lines between reality and the mystical blur. The trailer offers a glimpse into the extraordinary journey of a 76-year-old man who throws his family into disarray by announcing his impending wedding – to the ghost of his first love.
This unconventional event serves as a catalyst, sparking a wave of emotional revelations and confrontations as estranged children and bewildered grandchildren grapple with the news. Do they celebrate their father’s newfound love, or intervene in this seemingly impossible union? The trailer masterfully portrays the family’s struggle to navigate this uncharted territory, their uncertainty hanging heavy in the air.
Amidst the turmoil and family tensions, a central question emerges: “When all has withered, will love endure?” The series will be out on July 19 with two episodes airing each week on Zindagi.
