Jony Ive, the legendary designer behind Apple’s most iconic devices, has revealed that the Apple Watch might be his favourite creation. In a recent podcast interview, Ive shared insights into his time at Apple and the products that left a lasting impression on him.
“I’m proud of what we did with the watch because that’s something that I started after Steve had passed,” Ive said on the “Life in Seven Songs” podcast, referring to Apple’s late co-founder, Steve Jobs. The Apple Watch, introduced in 2014 and released the following year, was the company’s first wearable device and a major product launch after Jobs’ death in 2011.
Ive, who left Apple in 2019 after more than two decades with the company, explained why the watch holds a special place in his heart. “It’s one of the most personal products,” he said, describing how Apple devices have evolved from desktop computers to items worn on the body.
Apple products started off sitting on your desk, and then they ended up in your bag, and then they ended up in your pocket,” Ive noted. “And then it’s on your wrist, and it’s something that’s worn.”
The designer emphasized the unique relationship people have with wearable technology. “You have a different sort of relationship with things you wear and that are that intimate,” he observed, adding, “And I’ve always loved watches anyway. So as a category, I think this is an interesting one.”
During his time at Apple, Ive was responsible for designing numerous groundbreaking products, including the iPhone, iPad, and MacBook. His work played a crucial role in establishing Apple’s reputation for sleek, user-friendly devices.
Since leaving Apple, Ive has founded his own design firm, LoveFrom. Meanwhile, the Apple Watch has become a significant revenue generator for the tech giant, contributing to $7.9 billion in quarterly revenue for the company’s wearables division in early 2024.
Ive’s revelation offers a unique glimpse into the mind of one of tech’s most influential designers and highlights the ongoing importance of wearable technology in the consumer electronics market.
