A crucial four-wicket haul (4-22 in 9.3 overs) by seamer Mohit Avasthi reduced Bihar to 89 for six and has left Mumbai well-posed to take lead on a typically winter weathermarred Day Two in their Ranji Trophy opener against Elite Group debutants Bihar at the Moin-ul-Haq Stadium in Patna.
Bihar are currently trailing by 162 runs.
“I just backed my strengths and bowled a wicket-to-wicket line, looking to keep the ball within the stumps. There wasn’t much help from the pitch,” Avasthi told TOI from Patna.
A total of two-and-a hours of play was lost on Saturday due to fog. With visibility low, the stumps were drawn at 2.45pm. Avasthi took the wickets of Sraman Nigrodh (2), Babul Kumar (8), Sakibul Gani (22), who became the first batsman in the world to score a triple hundred on his First Class debut when he slammed 341 against Mizoram in a Plate Group match in Kolkata in February 2022, and ‘keeperbat Bipin Saurabh (0) to jolt Bihar.
Allrounder Shivam Dube supported him well, taking two for 13 in six overs, including the wicket of talented 12-year-old Bihar opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi (19).
Resuming on their overnight score of 235 for nine, Mumbai were all out for 251.
Meher, Yadav dazzle
A solid 92-run knock (179b, 13×4, 2×6) by Tanish Meher and his 88-run partnership for the eighth wicket with Prateek Yadav (44, 57b, 5×4, 1×6) helped Mumbai recover from 137 for six and finish at 307, with a 57-run first innings lead on Day Two of their Cooch Behar Trophy (for Under-19) semifinal match against Uttar Pradesh at the Sachin Tendulkar Gymkhana in Kandivali.
Brief Scores: Uttar Pradesh 250 (Kirtivardhan Upadhyay 81, Shubham Mishra 38, Mohd Aashiyan 31; Ayush Sachin Vartak 5-54) & 95-3 (Manava Sindhu 43*; Akash Pawar 3-41) vs Mumbai 307 (Tanish Meher 92, Ayush Mhatre 60, Prateek Yadav 44, Manan Bhatt 44; Shubham Mishra 4-78, Aditya Kumar Singh 3-48).
