Sarfarosh, which has developed a cult following over time, just marked its 25th anniversary of publication. While Aamir Khan was already a well-known figure in the industry, the film was a watershed moment in Sonali Bendre’s life. Bendre discussed how odd it seemed to commemorate the film’s 25th anniversary. She also spoke candidly about Sarfarosh 2.
Sonali Bendre reflects on 25 years of Sarfarosh; says, “It made me feel so old”
Sonali was asked in an interview with India Today how she intends to create her own mark on the industry. She said, “I think a month or two months ago, we celebrated 25 years of Sarfarosh and every body was talking about it. It was so surreal. I was like who would have thought that we would be sitting here and talking about this.”
She added, “And suddenly it made me feel so old. Everybody was talking about ‘OMG! How did you do?’ and I was like, ‘I feel like I am still learning. What are you talking about?’ I think legacy is something someone else talks about and discusses. I genuinely don’t think you can plan and have a legacy.”
Sonali Bendre was also questioned if she will make a cameo in Sarfarosh 2. She just laughed out loud, without revealing anything about the sequel.
John Matthew Matthan wrote and directed Sarfarosh, which stars Aamir Khan, Naseeruddin Shah, and Sonali Bendre in the key parts. The film took seven years to complete research, pre-production, and production before being released on April 30, 1999, shortly before the Kargil conflict, when tensions between India and Pakistan were high.
The Aamir Khan-starring film, which concentrated upon an Indian police officer’s efforts to combat cross-border terrorism, debuted to critical praise and was a commercial success. It also received the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. Later, it was adapted into Kannada as Sathyameva Jayathe and Telugu as Astram.
