NEW DELHI: The Congress on Monday upped the ante against the Modi 3.0 government as it marks the completion of its first 100 days, claiming that the Opposition compelled the Centre to take ‘U-turns’ on several of it flagship programmes and initiatives like lateral entry, OPS and Waqf board Bill.
During a presser, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said the “arrogance” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government will no longer work and it will have to make U-turns if its wrong decisions affect the people.
“The first part of the report card discusses Narendra Modi’s U-turn government. The U-turn government has been in operation for the past hundred days, and it is the democracy of this country, the opposition, and the people who have compelled these U-turns,” Shrinate said.
“Arrogance will no longer work, and the government will have to make U-turns. If any of your wrong decisions affect the people of the country, that law will not be made, and we will ensure continuous U-turns on it,” she added.
Shrinate also mentioned Waqf bill which was sent to the joint parliamentary committee (JPC) owing to pressure from the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc alliance parties.
“Lateral entry, which ignored reservations and was implemented afterward, faced opposition and anger from the people, leading to a U-turn on it. They claimed they would bring a broadcast bill to silence independent journalists who ask tough questions and show the mirror. The opposition was so strong that they had to make a U-turn on that bill as well. They said they would bring a board bill, which was nothing but a means of polarization and appeasement. The reality is that the entire opposition and the people of this country forced you to send it to the JPC,” she said.
“This is the first law sent to the JPC after 2019. You tried to impose indexation on the middle class and bring LTCG tax, but seeing the middle class’s anger and the opposition’s initiative, you had to withdraw the indexation. You made big claims that NPS is very good, OPS is bad, and there is nothing better than NPS, but you had to bring back OPS as well. So, why shouldn’t I say that these hundred days symbolize continuous U-turns?” she added.
The BJP-led NDA government completed its 100 days after coming to power for the third consecutive time. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections NDA won 294 seats and the INDIA opposition bloc making major gains and securing 233 seats.
