Sudipta Chakraborty has been supporting protesting doctors in Kolkata ever since a heinous crime was committed against a lady doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. The actress has been extremely vocal and is an active participant in all the protests that are taking place in the city, demanding justice for the doctor.
To further voice her protest, she has decided to return the Special Film Award conferred on her by the state government in July 2013.The actress wrote a letter to Information and Cultural Affairs department Secretary on Tuesday, where she mentioned she will continue seeking justice for the Kolkata rape and murder victim. Prior to Sudipta, actors Chandan Sen and Biplab Banerjee have also decided to return their respective awards in the light of the RG Kar rape-murder incident.
The actress also took to social media to post a copy of the letter she has written. It reads, “With a very heavy heart and pained mind, I’m writing this email to you to please accept my wish to return the Special Film Award given to me for my contribution in cinema on 24th July, 2013, by the Government of West Bengal, Information and Culture Dept.
Sir, I’ve been working in the film/tv industry since last 30 odd years. I’ve been fortunate enough to receive the National Film Award for my work in 2000 too from the then hon’ble President Of India.
But back home, being recognised for my work by our hon’ble State Government was a matter of immense pride. The Certificate given by you has been hanging on my wall till yesterday to reinstate the joy and pride I felt for it. But, in the wake of the current status of our State and the related comments made on 1st September, by one of our respected MLAs Mr Kanchan Mullick, I hereby wish to return my certificate and the honour bestowed upon me and continue my demand for Justice, both legal and social, standing on the road.
I had been paid an amount of Rs 25000/- (Rupees twenty five thousand) too with the certificate, if I remember correctly. Kindly provide me the means by which I can return the amount to your esteemed Department.
Looking forward to a positive response, Yours sincerely.” (sic)
Speaking to Calcutta Times, Sudipta says, “Kanchan Mullick’s comments were extremely insulting. I took this decision because he is a member of the ruling party in this state and the government is true facts about the RG Kar incident and misleading us too. It was audacious of Kanchan to say that we must give our awards back before protesting against the government. It is beyond shocking and humiliating to say the least. I will protest on the streets till the day justice is served. I don’t need awards as the audience’s love and appreciation is my biggest award.”
