PUNE: DPU Super Specialty Hospital, Pimpri, recently performed a complex robotic surgery on a 29-year-old female to extract a 6 cm long tumour that had covered over half the kidney.
The patient, a resident of Moshi, Pune, was suffering from a disturbing stomach ache and hematuria for three months. After a full body check-up, a non-cancerous tumour covering half the kidney was identified and extracted through an advanced robotic surgery, with no harm to the organ.
The patient was brought to the hospital on December 5,2023. Post consultation with Dr Himesh Gandhi, consultant uro-oncologist, director of robotic surgery, she was advised robotic surgery as this technologically advanced procedure enables the doctors to get a 3D view and 360-degree movement around the tumour and overall organ, enabling them to carry out the extraction process with absolute precision.
The surgery led by Gandhi, took place on December 6, 2023 and went on for 2 hours. Under this minimally invasive procedure, only 5 small incisions were made as compared to the conventional approach. The blood loss was also comparatively minimal. The tumor was then removed.
Post-surgery, the patient had a speedy recovery. After being under observation for just four days, she was discharged on December 10, 2023, and is now back to leading a normal life including daily routines like running chores and riding a two-wheeler.
