Musicians come and go, even on Spotify. Joni Mitchell, the legendary musician who broke up with the Swedish platform two years ago, is back on the app. She is purportedly the first high-profile reentry after Neil Young returned to the music service about a week ago.
Just like Young, Mitchell also protested against the “controversial remarks” made on Joe Rogan’s podcast.A report by The New York Times (via The Verge) says that several of the singer-songwriter’s albums, including Blue, are now available to stream on Spotify.
Just like her return, Mitchell followed Young in criticising Joe Rogan for allegedly “spreading misinformation about the COVID-19 vaccines”.
“I stand in solidarity with Neil Young and the global scientific and medical communities on this issue,” the Canadian singer-songwriter wrote in a post on her website.
“I’ve decided to remove all my music from Spotify. “Irresponsible people are spreading lies that are costing people their lives. I stand in solidarity with Neil Young and the global scientific and medical communities on this issue,” she added.

Young’s tip to Spotify to be ‘#1’

Young also returned to Spotify two years after pulling his music from the streaming platform over Spotify’s low-resolution audio quality. In a post, Young said that Spotify should start offering “Hi-Res music to everyone” to be “Really be #1 in all ways”.
Young has returned to a familiar concern: audio quality. He called Spotify “the leading streamer of low-resolution music” and urged them to improve by adopting high-resolution audio formats.
This aligns with Young’s history of advocating for high-fidelity music. He was involved with the Pono music player (now defunct) and previously criticised audio quality on services like Apple Music and Amazon Music.
“Hopefully they will turn to Hi Res and provide full-quality music for everyone. They have the potential to be the number one service in all aspects. With their music library and listeners, they could start with a limited high-resolution tier and expand from there!” he said.
