Ahmedabad is one of the top destinations for ardent shoppers. One of the notable night markets here is Manek Chowk which is opening soon after a month-long closure for urgent drainage system repairs. The renowned night market is set to reopen on Monday night bringing night life back in the city.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) initiated the closure to address drainage overflow issues that had been causing major inconvenience to both vendors and visitors.
Drainage issues
The decision to temporarily shut down the market was driven by persistent complaints regarding drainage overflows in the area. In response, the AMC decided on a rehabilitation project to overhaul the market’s drainage infrastructure. Utilising heavy machinery and a dedicated workforce, the corporation focused on replacing outdated water and sewer lines, particularly in the Khadia region, to prevent future blockages and ensure a more efficient drainage system.

Umang Nayak, the municipal councillor for Khadia, provided an update on the project’s progress, stating, “Manek Chowk was closed for a month due to the rehabilitation of the drainage lines. After receiving several complaints regarding drainage overflow, the AMC took action to rehabilitate the drainage system. With the completion of the rehabilitation work, Manek Chowk will resume its operations from Monday night as usual.”
Cultural hub
The reopening of Manek Chowk is more than just the resumption of a market; it’s the revival of a vibrant cultural and culinary hub that plays a pivotal role in Ahmedabad’s nighttime economy. Known for its diverse array of street food stalls offering local and regional delicacies, the market attracts both locals and tourists seeking authentic culinary experiences. The temporary closure had left a noticeable void, with many eagerly awaiting the return of their favorite food vendors and the lively evening ambiance.
As the market reopens, visitors can once again indulge in a variety of cuisines, from traditional Gujarati snacks to other Indian and international dishes, all within the bustling streets of the old city. The rejuvenated drainage system not only enhances the overall cleanliness and hygiene of the area but also ensures a more comfortable and enjoyable experience for all patrons.
The swift and effective intervention by the AMC underscores the importance of maintaining urban infrastructure to support the city’s dynamic street food culture and the livelihoods of numerous vendors. With the market’s reopening, Manek Chowk is poised to reclaim its status as a must-visit destination for food enthusiasts and cultural explorers alike.
