Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential and scope to assist scholars and researchers in deciphering the scripts of the Indus Valley Civilisation, and taking more information to the larger public, Omar Khan, an Indus enthusiast from San Francisco, the U.S., said.

Mr. Khan, also the founder of harappa.com — a website that has been publishing scholarly articles on Indus studies for the past three decades — was one among the several researchers who spoke at the International Conference commemorating the centenary year of the discovery of Indus Valley Civilisation in Chennai on Sunday.

Speaking to The Hindu, he said harappa.com had been publishing the works of leading scholars from India, Pakistan, the U.S, the U.K, and a few other countries for free since 1995.

“The intention is to broaden and expand the scope of learning about the Indus Valley Civilisation to help scholars, researchers and students…,” he said.

Explaining the evolution of the website over the years, he said: “Earlier, readers would visit the website to know what the Indus Valley Civilisation was all about. Now, many are keen on what the latest research and developments are in the field of Indus studies. We are also in the process of bringing in much more recent research works for the benefit of our readers.”

The way forward is to create online databases to take more information on Indus studies to the public, and to try and understand scripts of the Indus Valley Civilisation, he added.
