The rampant entry of unauthorised vehicles into Anna Bus Stand in Nagercoil in Kanniyakumari district creates significant difficulties for TNSTC drivers, private minibus drivers and the public in navigating the bus stand.
As a key transit hub in the district, the bus stand connects most parts of the district. However, a recurrent issue is the continuous violation of traffic rules by two-wheelers. Despite repeated enforcement efforts, these vehicles continue to enter premises, adding to congestion. Many commuters use the bus stand as a shortcut between Balamore Road and Avvai Shanmugam Salai.
Kumaran, a TNSTC driver, highlighted the problem. “The bus stand is already congested for both government and private buses. The entry of cars and two-wheelers only worsens the situation,” he said. “People here drop and pick up passengers directly at the bus steps without considering the inconvenience it causes to drivers and the public,” he said. While the authorities occasionally took action, the problem resurfaced soon after.
Anil Kumar, a flower vendor at the bus stand, said even vehicles belonging to the nearby post office enter the premises once or twice a day, whereas unauthorised entry, especially the violation of college students, had become uncontrollable.
A Traffic Inspector from Nagercoil division said that steps were being taken to curb the entry of these vehicles and signboards had been installed. He added that patrol officers have started locking violator’s vehicles on the spot and imposed fines. Surveillance would also be increased to prevent further violations.
