NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court‘s judgment quashing Gujarat government’s decision to grant remission to 11 rape convicts in the Bilkis Bano case has exposed BJP‘s “real” anti-women “chaal, charitra and chehra”, Congress said on Monday, a sentiment echoed by the bulk of the opposition including TMC, NCP and National Conference.
Condemning BJP’s bid to “protect” the rapists, Congress leadership including party president Mallikarjun Kharge, former chief Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and party spokesperson and legal eagle Abhishek Singhvi said the apex court’s verdict has laid bare who was providing patronage to criminals.
Kharge said, “‘Beti Bachao’ became ‘save the culprit’!… It exposes the misdeeds of the home ministry of Modi government and Gujarat government.”
Rahul said, “The tendency to ‘murder justice’ for electoral gains is dangerous for a democratic system. Today, the SC’s decision once again showed the country who gives ‘patronage to criminals’.”
West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee welcomed the SC’s “bold” judgment and said it proved that the rapists were moving freely and enjoying power, demanding a public apology from BJP for standing by rapists and murderers.
NCP chief Sharad Pawar said, “The remission decision exposes BJP’s stand to talk about Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, blowing the trumpet of bringing Women’s Reservation Bill on one hand and shielding the people who unleash atrocities on women on other hand.”
Congress also alleged BJP has habitually harboured leaders with anti-women credentials – from Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and Kuldeep Singh Sengar to Sandeep Singh Saini, Ramesh Jarkhiholi, Chinmayanand, and Ramdular Gaur.
