Anurag Kashyap defends violence in films; says, “In Bollywood, they would fill these roles with big stars, focusing on star power rather than telling a real story”

According to The Hindu, Anurag Kashyap praised the film Aavesham, starring Fahadh Faasil, and observed that the film’s writers were courageous in casting three influencers in key roles. He said, “In Bollywood, they would fill these roles with big stars, focusing on star power rather than telling a real story.”

He remarked that Bollywood frequently uses repeating formulae, but that thinking beyond the box might result in excellent films. He commended 12th Fail from last year and Laapataa Ladies from this year, adding that individuality is essential to their success. Kashyap also praised the recently released action drama Kill, calling it a one-of-a-kind film despite its genre.

He also acknowledged the criticism levelled at his own film, Maharaja, for its violence, noting that Kill got similar criticism. He stated, “ Kill is an action movie but still very unique in itself.” He also discussed how his picture Maharaja was heavily criticised for its violence, as was Kill.

In another old interview with Humans of Cinema, the filmmaker-actor criticised Bollywood for wasting money. He added, “A lot of money that is spent doesn’t go into making the film. It goes into the paraphernalia, it goes into the entourage.”

He emphasised that filmmaking is a serious effort that requires hard labour and imagination, rather than a recreational hobby. He pointed out that a significant percentage of the budget is allocated to equipment and support personnel. For example, he mentioned that even when filming in a distant wilderness, a car may be despatched to a city three hours away to get a five-star burger, emphasising the high costs involved.
