NEW DELHI: Mumbai Police on Tuesday held a press conference giving updates on the attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan, who was stabbed multiple times in his own house.
Addl CP West, Mumbai Paramjit Dahiya addressed the media stating that “enough evidence to confirm that they have the right accused.” On behalf of the police, he also dispelled rumours that the fingerprints did not match the accused. The spokesperson said, “Whatever fingerprints were collected from the crime scene, we have not received any official report (from CID) of the same as of this date.”
Further talking about evidence obtained from Saif Ali Khan’s residence, the police said that they have “physical, technical and oral- they have all three types of evidence”.
He also talked about the change in Investigation Officer in the case, debunking any rumours of mishandling or other issues, simply citing “administrative reasons”.
Also, clarifying certain concerns on the timeline of the attack the ACP said that, “Lilavati Hospital’s CCTV shows that the victim was brought to the hospital at 2.47 am,” after being questioned over the reports that claimed the time to be 4.11am. He also added that the initial didn’t come from Saif but from the hospital. “We did not receive a call from Saif Ali Khan personally. We got this information (about the attack) from the hospital,” said Dahiya in his media briefing.
The Mumbai police further revealed that following entry from Bangladesh, the suspect spent time residing in Kolkata. Consequently, a police team is conducting investigations in West Bengal. In another development connected to West Bengal link in the case, Mumbai Police recorded statement from a woman there whose Aadhaar card was used by the suspect to obtain a sim card. A police team from Mumbai visited West Bengal and obtained statements from two persons during their investigation. The first statement was from this woman whose Aadhaar card was fraudulently used for sim card procurement. Subsequently, they interviewed a family member of the suspect who resides in West Bengal.
Police investigations revealed that the suspect acquired the woman’s Aadhaar card through this relative’s assistance, which was then utilised to purchase the sim card.
The violent attack on the actor took place on January 16 at his home in Bandra, during which the assailant demanded Rs 1 crore and assaulted both a nanny and the actor with multiple stab wounds before escaping. The 54-year-old performer required immediate surgical intervention at Lilavati Hospital after the attack.
