Ashutosh Gowariker opens up about his prep for playing Ramakant S. Kulkarni in Manvat Murders; says, “I met Ramakant’s family to gain a deep understanding of his character”

For the first time ever, audiences will witness Ashutosh Gowariker take on this unique role of a calm and composed, yet highly perceptive cop whose unwavering dedication, perseverance, and expertise have helped crack some of the most complex cases in history.  On portraying the role of Ramakant. S. Kulkarni, Ashutosh Gowariker said, “I feel extremely fortunate to have been chosen to portray the character of Mr. Ramakant S. Kulkarni, the Police Officer of Bombay CID, who absolutely deserves to be showcased for the audiences today. He solved numerous cases that might have otherwise remained unsolved, including the infamous Manvat Murders. He was known as the Sherlock Holmes of India.

Based on this autobiography, Ashutosh has undergone quite a bit of prep for the role. He continued, “His autobiography, ‘Footprints on the Sands of Crime’, provided amazing insights into what his process was, his eye for detail, the way he handled suspects and made them confess – and how he believed in “searching for the truth, beyond the truth!”

Elaborating on bonding with his co-actors, he shared, “Another exciting aspect of this show was my collaboration with Makarand Anaspure after several years (last one being Sarkarnama in 1998) and working with two of my favourite actresses – Sonali Kulkarni and Sai Tamhankar. Working with them was like a crash course in acting. I was also excited to collaborate with Director Ashish Bende, who had a deep understanding of this story, genre and most importantly, my character.”

Interestingly, Ashutosh also met with Ramakant S. Kulkarni’s family to play his role with authenticity. Speaking about the experience, he added, “I met with Mrs. Ramakant Kulkarni, his daughter Anita Bhogle and Anita ji’s husband, Harsha Bhogle ji, to gain a deep understanding of his character – his persona, behaviour, beliefs, personal life, and more. Their inputs helped me prepare for the role, in my own humble way. Ramakant ji’s legacy is both inspiring and profound, and I hope that through this series, he will receive the recognition and appreciation he truly deserves for his remarkable work in solving several cases.”

For the unversed, Manvat Murders will follow his efforts to solve a string of bizarre murders in rural Maharashtra during the 1970s, all while running against time. Produced by Storyteller’s Nook (Mahesh Kothare and Adinath Kothare) and created by Girish Joshi, Manvat Murders boasts of an impressive ensemble cast, including Makarand Anaspure, Sonali Kulkarni, and Sai Tamhankar in the lead roles. The show will premiere on October 4 on Sony LIV.
