NEW DELHI: The Atlanta Falcons have named Raheem Morris, former defensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Rams, as their new head coach. Morris, 47, emerged victorious in a competitive hiring process that included notable candidates such as Bill Belichick, Jim Harbaugh, and Mike Vrabel. The Falcons conducted second interviews with Morris, Houston Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, and Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero.
Morris has previously served as a head coach during his tenure with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2009 to 2011, compiling a record of 17-31. He joined the Falcons in 2015, initially as the pass game coordinator, later adding wide receivers coach responsibilities. In 2020, he was promoted to defensive coordinator and took over as interim head coach when the Falcons parted ways with Dan Quinn midseason.

During his three-year stint as the Rams’ defensive coordinator, Morris contributed to the team’s success, helping them secure victory in Super Bowl LVI. The Rams’ defensive rankings under Morris were 17th, 19th, and 20th in total defense.
The decision to hire Morris came as a surprise, as Belichick, the highly decorated head coach of the New England Patriots, was considered a favorite for the job. With Morris taking the Falcons’ head coaching position, Belichick’s future for the 2024 season remains uncertain, with vacancies at the Washington Commanders and Seattle Seahawks yet to be filled.
