NEW DELHI: It may well be the end of the road for Auto Expo — India’s oldest and best-known motoring show — as govt prepares to pitch the just-concluded Bharat Mobility Global Expo as the leading and foremost automobile extravaganza of the country.
Enthused by the success of Bharat Mobility, which was held at the revamped Pragati Maidan halls, govt is now set to pitch it as the biggest mobility show to all the domestic and multinational companies.
Commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal, who had been the driving force behind Bharat Mobility, said the show at Pragati Maidan had managed to get diverse players associated with mobility under one roof, making it one of the most unique shows across the world.
“There were over 1,000 exhibitors at the three-day show, and we had representatives from the auto companies and their representative body Siam, industry body CII, component manufacturers and their association ACMA, tyre makers, IT grouping Nasscom, Indian Steel Association, Indian Construction Equipment Manufacturers’ Association, Indian Energy Storage Alliance, and Material Recycling Association. This has been one of the most successful exhibitions ever held for the mobility industry,” Goyal said.
When asked if there was any need for conducting the Auto Expo, which has been a biennial affair, Goyal said, “They may be merged (into the Bharat Mobility Expo).” The minister said govt sees Bharat Mobility to emerge as an annual affair where Indian and global companies will showcase new products and technologies.
Vinod Aggarwal, president of Siam, which had been one of the main architects behind Auto Expo (whose 15th edition was held in Jan 2023), was non-committal on the future of the show. “We will have to discuss this internally.”
