Ayodhya’s Deepotsav 2024: Fostering unity and community spirit

The Uttar Pradesh government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has launched this initiative with the objective of rekindling a sense of community and fostering a spirit of unity among the diverse population. The previous record for the most diyas lit in one location was also set in Ayodhya, where 22 lakh 23 thousand diyas were illuminated. This year, the aim is to surpass that achievement, highlighting not only the festival’s grandeur but also Ayodhya’s role as a central hub for Diwali celebrations in India.
Nischal Barot, a Guinness World Records official, emphasised the importance of this initiative, stating, “We need over 25 lakhs of diyas to create a world record this time. This goal is not just about numbers; it symbolises the light of hope and unity that Diwali represents.”

The Deepotsav will unfold through a series of meticulously planned events and activities, each designed to engage participants and create an unforgettable experience.

  • Chief Minister’s arrival: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is scheduled to arrive in Ayodhya at 2:30 p.m. on the day of the event. His presence not only elevates the celebration but also underscores the importance of government support in facilitating large-scale communal events. The state government has extended an open invitation to all, encouraging people to join in the festivities and witness the ambitious attempt to set a world record.
  • Preparation of diyas: The preparations for Deepotsav began early in the morning at 10 a.m., involving a dedicated team of volunteers, supervisors, and event coordinators. These individuals are tasked with filling lakhs of diyas with oil and wicks, a communal effort that not only enhances the aesthetic of the celebration but also fosters a sense of togetherness among participants. This hands-on engagement creates a deep connection to the festival’s spirit.
  • Aarti participation: A unique aspect of this year’s celebrations is the inclusion of aarti in the world record attempt. Organisers expect more than 1,100 individuals to gather for this ceremonial practice, which holds deep spiritual significance in Hindu culture. The collective performance of aarti serves as a powerful reminder of community devotion and faith, resonating deeply within the hearts of participants.
  • Thematic processions: The celebrations will feature processions showcasing 17-18 tableaux that depict various scenes from the Ramayana, an ancient epic central to Hindu beliefs. This visual representation of the epic not only educates attendees about their cultural heritage but also provides an engaging way to connect with the narratives of their faith. Moreover, the event will include artists from six neighbouring countries—Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, and Indonesia—adding a rich, multicultural dimension to the festivities. This inclusion emphasises the shared cultural heritage of the region and fosters international camaraderie.
  • Traditional dance performances: Deepotsav 2024 will also celebrate India’s diverse cultural landscape through a series of traditional folk dance performances. Dance forms such as Faruahi from Gorakhpur, Bamrasiya from Rajasthan, Mayur from Uttar Pradesh, Bahrupiya from West Bengal, Awadhi from Uttar Pradesh, and Tharu from Bihar will be featured. Each performance not only showcases the unique traditions of different states but also promotes cultural exchange and appreciation among attendees.
  • Swastika formation: As part of the celebrations, a prominent Swastika made from 80,000 diyas will be displayed at Ghat No. 10. This creation will serve as a significant visual and spiritual focal point of the event, symbolising good fortune and auspiciousness. The Swastika’s prominence in the festivities underscores the blending of art, spirituality, and community effort, inviting participants to reflect on the deeper meanings of their traditions.
  • Aerial drone show: In a modern twist to traditional celebrations, an aerial drone show featuring 500 Indian-made drones is planned. This innovative display will create vibrant visuals of revered figures such as Lord Ram, Lakshman, and Hanuman, enhancing the visual spectacle of the event. The incorporation of technology into the celebration reflects a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, capturing the attention of both young and old alike. The show will be accompanied by laser light displays and voiceovers, further enriching the overall experience and creating a mesmerising atmosphere.
  • Diwali celebration conclusion: As the celebrations come to a close, participants will be treated to a stunning display of fireworks and intricate rangoli designs. The fireworks will symbolise the triumph of light over darkness, while the rangoli—a traditional art form—will add colour and beauty to the event, inviting attendees to reflect on the festival’s significance. This grand finale serves not only as a visual delight but also as a communal moment of joy, marking the culmination of a day filled with shared experiences.
