CHANDIGARH: Punjab governor and Chandigarh administrator Banwarilal Purohit has resigned from his position, citing personal reasons. Purohit submitted his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday, stating, “Due to my personal reasons and certain other commitments, I tender my resignation from the post of governor of Punjab and administrator, Union Territory, Chandigarh. Please accept the same and oblige,” Purohit wrote in his resignation letter.
Purohit’s resignation comes after his meeting with Union home minister Amit Shah in Delhi, which took place a day before. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had recently won all three posts in the Chandigarh mayoral polls, a setback for the Congress-AAP alliance. The opposition alliance had alleged tampering with ballot papers by the presiding officer.

Earlier this week, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had approached the Punjab and Haryana high court, seeking fresh polls under the supervision of a retired judge.
However, the division bench denied interim relief to the AAP. In response, an AAP councillor filed a plea challenging the high court order, and the Supreme Court has agreed to consider his request for an urgent hearing.
