NEW DELHI: The West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday alleged Hindu devotees with saffron flags returning from a Ram Navami procession were “savagely attacked” in Kolkata’s busy Park Circus area, with the police, however, saying there was no such procession in the area.
“As the Ram Navami procession returned, Hindu devotees were savagely attacked in Kolkata’s Park Circus Seven Point area. Stones rained down on vehicles just for carrying saffron flags. Windshields shattered. Chaos unleashed. This wasn’t random—it was targeted violence. And where was the police? Right there. Watching. Silent. Spineless. The very force handpicked by @MamataOfficial —completely paralyzed by her politics of appeasement. Not one step taken to protect innocent Hindus,” Union minister and West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar wrote on X.
This “cowardly action,” Majumdar said, proved the system is “shaken” by the roar of “united Bengali Hindus” during the festival, and added that chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s “pampered Shanti Vahini” is “panicked, rattled and terrified.”

The state BJP chief also promised there would be a “bigger” procession at next year’s Ram Navami.
Kolkata Police react
Meanwhile, Kolkata Police said no permission was taken for a procession at Park Circus, and no such procession was taken out.

“Upon receiving information about damage to a vehicle, police intervened promptly to restore order. A case is being registered to investigate the matter. Public is advised not to heed any rumours,” it stated.
