NEW DELHI: BJP has formed a committee headed by the party’s national general secretary Vinod Tawde to screen the credentials of those keen to join the party ahead of the Lok Sabha polls this year, reports Akhilesh Singh.
Aiming to breach the tally of 400 seats this time, the party is looking for potential candidates from other parties, especially for the nearly 160 seats it had lost in 2019.
During a meeting at the residence of BJP President JP Nadda last Tuesday, a decision was taken that merits of those aspiring to contest the polls must be examined before they are offered the party’s platform, sources said.
“The committee under Vinod Tawde will explore the possibility of influential leaders and sitting MPs from other parties joining BJP. However, other than winnability, individual credentials of such leaders will also be examined before the party gets them in its fold,” a source said and added that the exercise will be mostly in constituencies, where the party has not done well in the past.
Sources said party General Secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Radhamohan Das Aggarwal, a prominent face from Gorakhpur in eastern UP, has been entrusted with the task of overseeing the vision document (manifesto) for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
They said national general secretary Sunil Bansal, who played a key role in the party’s victory in Uttar Pradesh, has been asked to look after the election campaign, publicity and other poll-related works.
